Before You Set Goals for the New Year, Get Clear on This One Thing
By Ange Drake
Every January, the same thing happens.
We set goals.
Train more.
Eat better.
Lose weight.
Be more disciplined.
Finally “get back on track.”
And yet, for so many women, those goals quietly fall apart a few weeks or months in not because they didn’t care enough, but because the goals were never anchored to why they mattered in the first place.
Before you decide what you want to achieve this year, it’s worth pausing to ask a deeper question:
What do I actually value and how do I want my life to feel?
Why Goals Without Values Don’t Stick
Goals are external.
Values are internal.
Goals tell you what you want to do.
Values explain why you’ll keep showing up when motivation dips.
If your goals are disconnected from your values, they’ll always feel heavy, forced, or optional especially when life gets busy, stressful, or unpredictable (which it always does).
This is why so many women:
- Start strong but burn out
- Feel guilty when routines slip
- Swing between extremes
- Constantly feel like they’re “behind”
The issue isn’t discipline.
It’s misalignment.
Start With Values, Not Outcomes
Instead of asking:
- How much weight do I want to lose?
- How many days should I train?
- What plan should I follow
Try starting here:
How do I want to feel in my body this year?
What kind of energy do I want to bring to my days?
What do I want my health to support in my life?
What version of myself am I trying to become?
Common values we see come up for women are:
- Energy
- Confidence
- Capability
- Calm
- Longevity
- Presence
- Self-respect
- Strength (physically and mentally)
Once you name your values, your goals become clearer and more sustainable.
From Values to Meaningful Goals
Here’s what this looks like in practice:
If you value energy, your goals might include:
- Eating regularly and fueling properly
- Training in a way that supports recovery
- Improving sleep and stress management
If you value confidence, your goals might include:
- Strength training consistently
- Tracking progress beyond the scale
- Learning new skills instead of chasing perfection
If you value calm or balance, your goals might include:
- Building “set and forget” routines
- Reducing decision fatigue around food
- Letting go of all-or-nothing thinking
Notice how none of these start with punishment, restriction, or extremes.
They start with support.
Why This Matters for Your Health & Fitness
When your goals align with your values:
- Consistency feels easier
- Habits become identity-based
- Motivation becomes less important
- Progress compounds over time
You stop asking, “How hard can I push?”
And start asking, “What supports the life I want to live?”
This is where real, lasting change happens.
A Simple Reflection to Try Today
Before setting any New Year goals, grab a notebook and answer these:
What do I want more of in my life this year?
What do I want less of?
Which 3 values feel most important to me right now?
What daily or weekly habits would honour those values?
What systems could I put in place to support them — even when life gets busy?
Don’t rush this. Clarity here saves months of frustration later.

This Year, Choose Alignment Over Perfection
You don’t need a harsher plan.
You don’t need more willpower.
You don’t need to start again for the hundredth time.
You need clarity.
You need support.
You need systems that work with your life.
Start this year by honouring what matters to you and let your goals grow from there.
If you’re ready to do that, the Kickstart Challenge is here to support you.
