Why Fibre Matters More for Weight Loss in Your 40s, It’s Not Just About Digestion

By Ange Drake

If weight loss feels harder in your 40s, even though you’re training, eating “well,” and doing all the right things, you’re not imagining it.

This stage of life comes with real physiological changes. Hormones fluctuate, insulin sensitivity shifts, inflammation creeps up, and your gut health plays a much bigger role than it used to.

And one of the most overlooked tools for navigating all of this?

Fibre!

Not in a “eat more bran” way, but in a metabolic, hormonal and gut health way.

Let’s break down why fibre becomes a non negotiable for sustainable fat loss in midlife.

Fibre and Hormones, What’s Really Going On

In your 40s, many women enter perimenopause, a transition marked by erratic estrogen, not necessarily low estrogen.

Here’s the part most people don’t realise.

Estrogen isn’t just produced and used. It’s metabolised and cleared through the gut.

The estrogen and gut connection

After estrogen has done its job,

  1. It’s broken down by the liver
  2. Sent to the gut via bile
  3. Excreted through stool

But the gut microbiome plays a huge role in whether estrogen is, excreted, or reabsorbed back into circulation.

Low fibre intake alters the gut microbiome and increases an enzyme called β glucuronidase, which allows estrogen to be reabsorbed instead of excreted.

The result is higher circulating estrogen levels, more bloating, more fat storage especially around the middle, and more hormonal noise, even as ovarian estrogen production declines.

Adequate fibre helps bind estrogen in the gut, supporting proper clearance and more stable hormonal signalling.

Fibre, Gut Health and Fat Loss

Fibre feeds beneficial gut bacteria. When these bacteria ferment fibre, they produce short chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, acetate and propionate.

These compounds:

  • Improve insulin sensitivity
  • Reduce chronic inflammation
  • Support gut barrier integrity
  • Influence fat metabolism and appetite regulation

Low fibre intake leads to fewer short chain fatty acids and poorer metabolic health.

This is one reason why fat loss can stall in your 40s even when calories look right on paper.

Inflammation, The Silent Fat Loss Blocker

Chronic low grade inflammation increases with age, stress, poor sleep and hormonal shifts.

Low fibre diets are associated with:

  • Increased gut permeability
  • Higher endotoxin load
  • Elevated systemic inflammation
  • Reduces fat oxidation
  • Worsens insulin resistance

All these factors will make weight loss harder, even in a calorie deficit.

Fibre helps calm this inflammatory load by supporting gut integrity and microbiome diversity.

Blood Sugar Control, A Big One in Perimenopause

As estrogen fluctuates, insulin sensitivity often declines. That means:

  • Bigger blood sugar spikes,
  • Stronger cravings,
  • Energy crashes,
  • Increased fat storage.

Fibre slows digestion and glucose absorption, leading to:

  • More stable blood sugar,
  • Better appetite control,
  • Fewer reactive cravings.

This is why many women feel out of control around food in their 40s, and why fibre can restore a sense of regulation.

Fibre Isn’t Anti Protein, It Completes the Picture

We talk a lot about protein, and for good reason.
It preserves muscle, supports metabolism and improves body composition.

But high protein without fibre often leads to, constipation, poor gut health, hormonal disruption,
and plateaued fat loss.

The sweet spot for women in their 40s is, high protein and high fibre.

This combination supports muscle, appetite, hormones and gut health, without extreme restriction.

So How Much Fibre Do You Actually Need?

Most women are getting less than half of what they need.

A solid target is,
25 to 30 grams of fibre per day, spread across meals, from whole foods first.

Think vegetables at every meal, fruit daily, legumes, whole grains and seeds, not just fibre supplements to patch gaps.

Summary

In your 40s, fibre isn’t just about digestion. It supports estrogen clearance, improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation, enhances gut health and makes fat loss feel more manageable. This is why low fibre, ultra-processed diet approaches often fail midlife women, even when calories and training are technically correct.

At 23W, we don’t chase extremes.
We build systems that work with your physiology, not against it. If you would like more support on setting realistic goals to increase fibre, be sure to reach out to our 23W team.

And fibre is one of the most powerful and underused tools in that system.
